47 year old TV producer and screenwriter Shonda Rhimes, has inked a multiyear deal with the streaming service Netflix, to develop new programs for it, while her longtime associate Betsy Beers will continue to work under the Shondaland banner at ABC.
The Chicago native said in a statement that her new pact comes amid working alongside Netflix chief content officer Ted Sarandos to continue building on her legacy ‘as a storyteller,’ while evolving her company in a way that ‘has limitless possibilities.’
She credited Sarandos for understanding ‘what [she] was looking for’ and providing her the means to accomplish it with ‘a clear, fearless space for creators.’
Rhimes said that her new deal gives her ‘the opportunity to build a vibrant new storytelling home for writers with the unique creative freedom and instantaneous global reach provided by Netflix’s singular sense of innovation.’
She will be greatly missed at ABC studios, but we can’t wait to see the magic she’s set to perform at Netflix.
